Autism Across the Lifespan: Childhood Online

Skill-building and participation in school allows most children to enter a wider social context at this stage (Catalano, 2020). They are increasingly organized and capable of thinking logically, yet the left hemisphere remains dominant. Children in these years continue to experience life on a physical level, with an emphasis on competition and physical capabilities as well as understanding problems on a simplistic, physical level (Donnelly, 2016). In the Western world, they begin to realize they have membership in groups outside their nuclear family, an awareness that may be lifelong in other cultures. Autistic children are likely to fall behind in some developmental arenas and yet surpass peers in others. Any achievements cause unpredictable reactions among peers (Sari, 2021). This program uses Piaget’s Concrete Operations stage and Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-ecological System Theory to guide the discussion on childhood development of clients with Autism. Specifically, this program will address strategies used in child development including the teaching of social skills and physical activity and how this looks for both children with and without Autism. It will also discuss the clinical reasoning behind psychotherapy vs. other treatments for supporting Autistic children and their parents.

Presented by Kate McNulty, LCSW and Matt Lowry, LPP
