Working With Non-Monogamous Clients Online

The practice of consensual non-monogamy, an umbrella term encompassing any relationship where individuals have multiple sexual or romantic partners with the consent of all those involved (Katz & Graham, 2020), is ever expanding. Recent research shows that 20% of adults have practiced consensual non-monogamy at some point in their lifetime, as interest in consensual non-monogamy among the general population continues to grow (Woodbridge, 2022). Despite these numbers, bias and stigma toward this population persist in the mental health field (Herbitter et al., 2021), negatively impacting non-monogamous clients’ experiences in therapy.

To prepare therapists with basic competency in working with non-monogamous clients, this webinar will provide an overview of the vast relational possibilities outside of the monogamous norm. Commonly used terms and their definitions will be included so that therapists will have a shared language with which to communicate with these clients. As recommended by Herbitter et al., (2021), participants will conceptualize this population using the Minority Stress Framework (Meyer, 2003), to better understand their experiences of stigma, and how it impacts both their experiences in therapy and experiences of living in a mononormative culture – one that prescribes monogamy as the only “normal” way to be in intimate relationships.

Participants will critically examine the social constructs and systems which contribute to stigmatization of those who practice non-monogamy, while reviewing the research which disproves many of the stereotypes about this population. The webinar will also include an overview of the unique challenges this population faces, and clinical recommendations for working with non-monogamous clients in an affirming, supportive way.
