Supervisor Liability, Duty of Care, and Risk Management Online
This training provides an overview of the legal and ethical responsibilities of clinical supervisors, with a focus on liability, duty of care, and risk management in professional practice. Participants will examine the legal foundations of supervisory responsibility and explore common sources of legal exposure that may arise in the supervision process. Emphasis is placed on understanding the distinctions between direct liability, vicarious liability, negligence, and other forms of professional accountability that can impact supervisors, supervisees, and organizations.
Participants will review high-risk clinical situations that frequently require enhanced supervisory oversight, including suicide risk assessment and intervention, mandated reporting obligations, and concerns involving abuse, neglect, or harm to vulnerable populations. Through case examples and discussion, supervisors will identify effective approaches for supporting supervisees in managing complex clinical situations while ensuring compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The training will also explore practical risk-management strategies designed to reduce supervisor liability and promote client safety. Topics include documentation practices, informed consent for supervision, consultation and referral, competence assessment, risk-focused supervision, and proactive decision-making. Participants will leave with tools to strengthen supervisory oversight, mitigate legal and ethical risks, and foster a culture of accountability and client protection within their supervisory practice.
