Autism Across the Lifespan: Emerging Adulthood Online

The concept of emerging adulthood as a newly identified developmental stage was introduced by Dr. Jeffrey Arnett (Arnett, 2000). With the prolonged preparatory education required for financial advancement at the beginning of the 21st century, young adults were delaying marriage and parenthood, moving the previously established mileposts relied on to connote adult status. During this period spanning ages approximately 18-25, researchers instead noted new developmental tasks during post-adolescence such as equalizing relationships with parents, identifying one’s values, and becoming financially self-supporting. The pace of maturing among Autistic adults deviates from this widely recognized theory. Autistic progression toward adulthood takes various forms and is often non-linear. Some young adults assume independent living with little preparation, to varying degrees of success. Others extend their connection with parents and family well beyond conventional expectations (Moser, 2024). Autistic adults in this chronological age range may arrive at starkly contrasting living arrangements and degrees of independence. Aside from social and economic forces, those who study adult development may have originally underestimated the time required for anyone to achieve full adulthood (Hochberg, 2020). This program will identify factors that affect the emerging adulthood stage for Autistics and their families, discuss clinical considerations of the concept of “failure to launch,” and demonstrate the application of accommodations for the Autistic population at this life stage.
