Understanding Meta-Analysis for the Clinician

Understanding Meta-Analysis for the Clinician Online

Meta-analyses have proliferated as a means of supporting evidence-based practice in the healing arts. This is certainly true of hypnosis – a plethora of studies using meta-analysis have been published in the 30 years since Irving Kirsch and colleagues published their influential work on hypnosis as an adjunct to cognitive-behavioral interventions. This webinar is geared toward the clinician who wishes to learn what to look for in evaluating a meta-analysis, and how the meta-analysis can be used to inform others of the value of hypnosis. We will cover the differences between meta-analysis and a systematic review, current expectations regarding registering a meta-analysis prior to starting the work, how study quality is assessed, how studies with substantial differences in methods are combined, and how to interpret the statistics and conclusions derived from meta-analysis. No prior knowledge of statistics is needed – participants will leave with a better appreciation of meta-analysis, and how to understand the practical implications of the results.
