Autism Across the Lifespan: Early Development

Autism Across the Lifespan: Early Development Online

This is the initial meeting of a ten-session, 20 hour course applying theories of developmental psychology, including Piaget’s Sensorimotor theory and Vygotsky’s sociocultural learning, to the Autistic population. This session will review theories of prenatal and infant development, applying Piaget’s sensorimotor theory (Thelen, 2001) to an Autistic infant population. We will compare stage models of typical development such as Erikson, Trust vs. Mistrust (Sacco, 2013) to observations of atypically-developing children. This foundational class will provide a summary of established findings and integrate this knowledge with principles of the neurodiversity framework (Dwyer, 2022).

In this program, participants will learn to identify current hypotheses attributing delays in language acquisition to neurological differences of autistic infants. Additionally, they’ll be able to evaluate some of the research methods used to study prenatal and perinatal environmental contributors. Lastly, participants will be able to compare findings on pre-verbal vocalizations in Autistic and non-Autistic infants.

The content of this meeting will be relevant to clinicians working with any age range of clients and will contribute to insights about neurobiology, language and motor development. The course will encourage critique and appraisal of current research, and scrutiny of underlying assumptions and methods used.

Presented by Kate McNulty, LCSW and Matt Lowry, LPP
