Autism Across the Lifespan: Program Summary and Clinical Recommendations Online

Research on the features of age across the Autistic lifespan is limited, but several consistent themes are evident. Autistics experience emotional dysregulation to a greater degree than non-Autistics ( Dell-Osso, 2023). They are limited in the ability to buffer stress and maintain equilibrium ( McQuaid, 2022). These difficulties are present to some degree, aside from the presence or absence of cognitive impairment (Prigge, 2021). Autistic adults benefit from access to social roles and proximity to others which allows them to build sufficient social support networks. Those who have received role modeling and services for developing adaptive behavior earlier in life function better as they age ( Tomaszeski, 2025).

After attending this program, participants will be able to relate distinct features of Autism and 3 considerations in modifying traditional therapy techniques for their needs. Additionally, they will be able to describe 3 effective options for eliciting feedback on the therapeutic alliance from Autistic clients. Lastly, participants will walk away able to compare 2 rationales for improving clients’ capacity for managing emotional dysregulation.

Presented by Kate McNulty, LCSW and Matt Lowry, LPP
