Rethinking Function Through a Trauma Lens: Relational Frame Theory (RFT), Individualized Interventions, and Regulation Online

Traditional function-based assessments may fail to capture the complex, derived stimulus relations that govern the behavior of clients with trauma histories. This ethics-focused training provides behavior analysts with a conceptual toolkit from Relational Frame Theory (RFT) to better understand and intervene with this population. Participants will learn how trauma can transform the function of neutral stimuli via arbitrarily applicable relational responding (AARR), leading to behavior that appears to be maintained through automatic/sensory means. The session will cover how to recognize a trauma-influenced function and how to write function-based treatment goals that explicitly target regulation skills both before and after the occurrence of problem behavior.
