Group Psychotherapy with Addicted Populations: An Experiential Approach Online

This two-hour workshop will explore how interpersonal group psychotherapy can be used to support individuals recovering from addictions and compulsive behaviors. The workshop leaders will present the foundations of Interpersonal Group Therapy. The theory will be demonstrated using video clips from two online demonstration groups. A discussion focusing on opportunities to apply the techniques to back-home groups will conclude the workshop. Dr. Jeffrey Roth, an addictions psychiatrist based in Chicago, is both the leader for the demonstration groups and a co-presenter for the workshop. This will allow participants to comment and ask questions to the group leader. Dr. Roth will share the thought process that led him to make the various interventions in the groups. In addition to exploring the role of the group leader, workshop participants will have an opportunity to learn about other aspects of group dynamics, including the elements of boundaries, authority, roles and primary task. The impact of addiction on all family members will likewise be explained.

After attending this session, participants will leave with tools to apply group relations theory to the process of addiction and recovery. They will be able to explain how addiction impacts not only the primary addicted individual, but his family members as well. Lastly, they will be able to implement group therapy interventions including role play, confrontation, and reenactment.

Presented by Barney Straus, LCSW, GCP, and Jeffrey Roth, MD, CGP
