Reflective Models of Clinical Supervision Online

The Clinical Supervision Series I: Foundations & Models Microcredential series covers the foundational competencies in clinical supervision for mental health professionals, including supervisor roles, functions, core competencies, and major supervision models including developmental, psychotherapy-based, integrative, reflective, constructivist, and blended approaches to supervision to support effective, ethical, and developmentally responsive site supervision.

Reflective models of supervision provide a framework for supporting the professional growth, ethical practice, and clinical competence of counselors-in-training (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019; Borders & Brown, 2021). Emphasizing self-examination, critical dialogue, and integration of theory with practice, reflective supervision fosters both skill development and professional identity (Falender & Shafranske, 2017; Watkins, 2020). Within this framework, supervisors integrate multiple theoretical approaches. Reflective supervision supports psychodynamic supervision through exploration of unconscious processes and relational dynamics; cognitive-behavioral supervision through structured feedback and skill development; person-centered supervision through empathy and authenticity; and systemic supervision through attention to relational and contextual influences. These approaches align with ethical standards from the American Counseling Association (2014) and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (2024). This presentation will identify and discuss the key aspects and applications of these supervision models to support ethical practice and clinical competence.
