Beyond Boundaries: Expanding the Impact of Behavior Science Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration Online

Interdisciplinary research collaborations have been recognized as valuable and highlighted across a variety of disciplines, including behavior analysis. Yet, despite growing interest in interdisciplinary work, little guidance exists for behavior analysts seeking to initiate and sustain such collaborations. This presentation will provide practical guidance for behavior analysts interested in interdisciplinary research, outlining key steps for identifying collaborators, developing shared goals, and building effective communication strategies across disciplinary perspectives. It will also highlight the professional and interpersonal skills needed to support these efforts, including scientific curiosity, flexibility, perspective-taking, and cultural humility. Drawing on examples from interdisciplinary teams, the presentation examines both the opportunities and challenges that arise when researchers work across disciplinary boundaries. Actionable strategies will be discussed to facilitate successful collaborations, foster innovation, and navigate differences in language, methods, and priorities. Interdisciplinary collaboration represents an opportunity to enhance the reach and impact of the science of behavior, broaden the influence of the field, and address misconceptions that may limit behavior analysts’ opportunities to contribute meaningfully to diverse research agendas.
