Hypnosis for Pediatric GI Disorders Online

Dr. Vlieger will explore the evolving role of hypnosis as a potent therapeutic tool for children suffering from various gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Psychologists and other behavioral health specialists have an increasing role in providing clinical hypnosis to patients with GI disorders, including children. The leading North American demonstrating the efficacy of hypnosis in this area is a psychologist (Olafur Palsson).

The latest clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of hypnosis in managing functional abdominal pain (FAP), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and functional nausea will be discussed. Dr. Vlieger will also touch upon its emerging application in inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, where it may serve as a valuable adjunct to standard medical care.

A central part of this session is dedicated to the Dutch treatment protocol. As healthcare continues to digitize, we will critically evaluate the transition from face-to-face sessions to online treatment modules. We will discuss the distinct advantages of digital care—such as increased accessibility and patient comfort—alongside the potential challenges regarding the therapeutic alliance and patient selection.

To bridge the gap between theory and practice, the lecture will feature several clinical case studies. These will highlight the nuances of pediatric hypnosis and reveal important caveats and pitfalls to avoid.
