Autism Across the Lifespan: Toddlerhood and Early Intervention

Autism Across the Lifespan: Toddlerhood and Early Intervention Online

The toddler stage of development is the time when indicators of Autism are likely to become apparent to parents and professionals (Ozonoff, 2009). Pediatricians and teachers advise early intervention for toddlers and pre-school children who show autistic traits or other neurodevelopmental delays. The rationale is that brain plasticity at this stage offers irretrievable advantages and that critical pathways in brain development may be missed. However, Autistic researchers and clinicians bring a different viewpoint to assessing the outcomes of these interventions (Gruson-Wood, 2016). This program will consider developmental needs of children and their families at this life stage. We will summarize and consider contrasting viewpoints on the utility of specialized care for Autistics compared to no intervention or minimal targeted interventions. The program will equip participants with knowledge of conventional practices for this age group as well as insights based on lived experience of the presenters and other representatives of the Autistic community. Specifically, this program will address the areas of development in toddlerhood and differentiate atypical behaviors in children with Autism. Participants will review the areas of need when creating a treatment plan for toddlers and their families when the toddler has Autism.
